Actor Leena Maria Paul, who will be seen in John Abraham’s upcoming production “Madras Cafe”, was arrested in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Tuesday over a cheating case registered with the Chennai Police. The main accused, her live-in partner, is absconding.
Leena, 25, from Kerala’s Thrissur district, and Balaji aka Sekar Reddy and Sukkesh Chandrasekar of Bhavani Nagar in Bangalore, were targeted in a joint operation by the Delhi and Tamil Nadu Police.
“Balaji had approached Canara Bank in Chennai posing as an IAS officer and obtained a loan of Rs 19 crore using forged documents on the pretext of opening a firm. He along with Leena also cheated the bank of Rs 76 lakh by seeking an investment for a project,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B S Jaiswal.
The Delhi Police took up the investigation after a team from the Tamil Nadu Police approached them on May 25 to trace the duo. On the basis of details available with the Tamil Nadu Police, they were located in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Asola village in Fatehpur Beri.
A close watch was kept on the farmhouse and registration numbers of some vehicles were noted down. Finally, on the basis of vehicle numbers and criminal intelligence, they were traced to Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj.
The police overpowered Leena and the security guards, four of whom were armed.
Balaji, who became aware of police presence fled in another car. The weapons, seized from the guards, have an all-India licence obtained from Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir but are not endorsed by the Delhi licensing branch.
“A case under the Arms Act has also been registered at the Fatehpur Beri police
station against the four guards as their weapons licence was not registered with the licensing branch of the Delhi Police within 30 days of their arrival, which is mandatory,” he said.
Leena is a BDS graduate and did her schooling in Dubai. She is into modelling and the film industry for the last two years.
